If you want to have a wedding cake that will be as talked about as your reception then keep in mind certain questions you have to ask your cake designer before engaging him to create your wedding cake.

Here are a few questions that will enable you to understand what you need to know before you make your choice of a wedding cake designer.

Can i view your previous work?

Can i taste the variety of wedding cake flavors and fillings?

Can you provide at least three references whom i can contact?

Will you be able to create a custom wedding cake or are there a variety of designs and styles from which i can choose?

What price do you charge and how flexible is it? Can you show me the price list that I can consult?

Does the cake price include items like cake toppers, stands, tiers, fountains and cutters or are they charged separately? If I change flavors or fillings will that change the price as well?

Are you willing to contact my florist if my cake requires fresh flowers, or you have a florist of your own or i will have to provide you with the flowers myself?

The ingredients that you use in the preparation of cakes? What kind of icing do you use?

Do you make peanut-free or other allergen-free (eggs, milk, gluten, etc) cakes?

Will you prepare the cake on the wedding day or before hand?
If you are preparing it beforehand, then how long before the wedding will it be prepared and how will that affect the taste of the cake?
Though the cake should be prepared close to the wedding day as it remains fresh, however be careful of wedding cake designers who say that they bake the wedding cake on the wedding day. Wedding cakes require several days of preparation and anyone who tells you  otherwise is either lying or inexperienced. Most cakes take three to five days to prepare.

How much charges for delivery? Will the delivery person be able to make emergency frosting or decoration repairs and arrange the cake table?

It is always best to have the baker deliver the cake as then they will be responsible for any accidents that might occur along the way.

So after making a thorough inquiry from the wedding cake designer about the cake you will be in a position to employ a good designer and thereby have the perfect cake for the most special day of your life.

Tips to get a fabulous wedding cake

While planning a wedding most people give a lot of importance to their wedding dress, accessories, reception hall, catering, music, flowers and then at last pay attention to their wedding cake.

Even though the wedding cake is an integral part of the wedding and will be remembered by your guest for a long time people think about their cake at length. If you want to find a stunning cake do a little research work beforehand.

Go through myriad wedding magazines to get a good idea of the style and design you will prefer. Once you have selected a design or two start looking for a baker or cake designer. However if you dont know any cake designer or baker ask for help. There are  many people who will be willing to help you find the right cake designer. In fact your caterer or reception hall manager may provide you with several good cake designers with whom they must have worked in the past.
When you have the list of bakers, call them up and fix an appointment for a meeting. All this should be done at least four to six months in advance of the wedding day.

When you meet the baker or cake designer make sure you tell him all the details about the cake you would like to have :

Select the cake design; take picture of the chosen cake

The size or number of tiers depend on your guest list

Frosting may include butter cream, fondant, royal, etc

Taste a sample and then decide on the flavors and fillings that they can provide

Choose accents and toppers like fresh flowers, beading, traditional topper, etc

Find out the cost of the cake and delivery charges

You can also ask the baker as to how the cake will be made like – will the cake be baked on the wedding day or beforehand and frozen?

What are the ingredients that will be used?

Is it possible for them to make allergy free cakes

Are they certified by the Department of Health and Agriculture?

Dont engage a baker until and unless you are completely satisfied with a baker. After all it is the most important occasion of your life and the wedding cake should be absolutely stunning.
