The tradition of wearing veils dates back to the Roman Empire when brides wore wedding veils to protect themselves from evil spirits. The brides wore a dress similar to the bridesmaids dresses to conceal their identity from jealous evil spirits. Wearing veils was customary for the bride. It  symbolized modesty as brides were not permitted to display their beauty while in public.

However with changing times the idea behind wearing veils has changed tremendously. Today wearing veils depends entirely on the personal preferrence of the bride. It is not compulsory for the bride to wear veils. Veils are usually worn by the bride to make a fashion statement and appear more gorgeous and stunning. The choice of the wedding veil is influenced by the bridal gown. The veil should complement the wedding gown worn by the bride on the big.

Its a good idea to keep your wedding veil simple if the wedding gown is fully embellished or has intricate designs, ruffles, bead work or embroidery on it. Wearing a similarly highly adorned wedding veil will obscure the wedding gown embellishments. Moreover the bride may appear overdone. If the wedding gown bodice or back is embellished make sure you wear a short length veil to avoid the the details get hidden. If you want, you can add a simple trim, lining the edges of the veil with pearls and laces.

On the other hand if you have a stunningly simple classic wedding gown then select a wedding veil with intricate pattern, embroidery or beadwork to complement your overall look. If your wedding gown has cuts make sure you pick a veil that is comfortable during the entire wedding ceremony and doesn’t get in the way.

Classic and old clothes are back in fashion hence you can consider borrowing a veil from a happily married woman as a good luck charm for your married life and not because you intend making a fashion statement. Dont try and correct the colour of the vintage wedding veil as you may end up spoiling the fabric of the veil. Even if the vintage veil has a darker or creamier shade it wont make much difference because the fabric is old and ethereal.

Most importantly choose a proper length wedding veil so that you can comfortably walk down the aisle. A long length wedding veil is suitable for traditional church wedding ceremonies otherwise it clusters causing inconvenience to the bride. The bride has to move around during the wedding reception party meeting and socializing with guests. Therefore the veil should allow her to move freely.
