There is no difference between a tuxedo jacket and a suit jacket with the exception that the face of the lapel is made of satin and gives the tux jacket a distinct satin-y sheen. Moreover all the regular sizes are available in a tux jacket.
Jackets come in varied sizes. There are long jackets with five buttons and short jackets with two buttons available in the market. If you are below six feet choose carefully. Long jackets may make you look shorter. Tuxedo jackets with five buttons is suitable for tall men.
Lapel styles
Jacket lapels are the decorative revers on the face of formal jackets, most commonly found on men’s clothing. They are formed by turning down the collar and turning back the top part of the jacket’s closure, as in this image. Collars arose from simple necklines to support neckwear, then were turned over into lapels starting in the late 18th century.
When buying your wedding tuxedo it is important to remember that the chosen jacket lapel style will influence the way you look. Although lapels are an essential part of men’s formal wear, your choice of lapel style depends entirely on your personal preference.
Tuxedo jackets come in a variety of styles. It can be single or double-breasted with one or six buttons. There are three basic forms of lapels to choose from :The peaked lapel forms a “V” at the collar and points upward. The notched lapel has an indentation at the collar in the shape of a triangle and is often seen on business suits. The shawl lapel has no indentation and smoothly curves around the neck. Peaked and shawl are the more formal, traditionally seen on dinner jackets and tailcoats.
Peak lapel
On a peak lapel jacket, the lapel points extend upward above the bottom of the collar. Peak lapels are considered the most formal lapel style, and are thus found on such formalwear as the morning coats, tailcoats and tuxedo jacket.
“Trick” lapels encompass all other variations, such as the lapel-less Nehru jacket. The peak lapel is the most common lapel style. It forms a “V”.
Notch lapel
The notch lapel is squared off to the top of the collar, giving a “notched” effect. The notch lapel is the most common, being the standard for suit jackets, blazers and sport coats.
Shawl lapel
The shawl collar is a continuous curve. Originally seen on the smoking jacket it is most common on the smoking jacket’s descendant, the tuxedo. The shawl lapel is a rounded, smooth lapel running from the collar down the front of the lapel.
